Is My Child Ready for The Wizard of Oz?

NATALIE

From Director, Jon Tracy on The Wizard of Oz:

“We are aiming to make The Wizard of Oz richer in heart and LESS scary then the movie by making spectacle (bouncing monkeys, flying witches, glowing orbs, clowning, and classic shadow play) out of areas of the play that, on their own, have kept parents from bringing the kids to the Wizard of Oz for decades.”

Is The Wizard of Oz Right for my child?

While we always defer the answer to the parents who know their children best, here is some information about the show that might help:

While our version of the story will be like no other you’ve every experienced, if your child knows the book or the movie, they will be more comfortable with what they see on-stage.

Our Wicked Witch is not the typical green-faced witch.  Our witch  has no face paint.  Also, she changes costume right on stage, displaying the transformation from good to evil right before your eyes with the use of white and black robes.  This may make her less scary.

Our flying monkeys use a bungee system to bounce around the stage, and are costumed in a modern, conceptual way – instead of the traditional scary masks.

There are loud sounds, including simulated thunder, throughout the play.  Combined with the use of strobe lights, this could be startling for children.

We use dolls and puppets in the show.  Our child cast of ‘munchkins’ wear unusual face masks.

Toto is a real dog in our show.  “Maggie” is the perfect cast member – and kids love her!

If your child enjoys visual stimulation, there is lots to experience in our show – the set is very colorful, the costumes very unusual, colorful props….Also, the actors move and dance a lot, and there are even aerial and acrobatic elements to the show.  And, of course, the music is very uplifting – with tunes you and your child might already know!

The show runs 2 hours and 15 minutes, with an intermission of 15 minutes.
