The timeless enchantment of a magical fairy tale is reborn with the Rodgers & Hammerstein hallmarks of originality, charm and elegance. Originally presented on television in 1957 starring Julie Andrews, Rodgers & Hammerstein’s CINDERELLA was the most widely viewed program in the history of the medium. Its recreation in 1965 starring Lesley Ann Warren was no less successful in transporting a new generation to the miraculous kingdom of dreams-come-true, and so was a second remake in 1997, which starred Brandy as Cinderella and Whitney Houston as her Fairy Godmother. As adapted for the stage, with great warmth and more than a touch of hilarity, the hearts of children and adults alike still soar when the slipper fits. This Enchanted Edition is based on the 1997 teleplay, which starred Brandy, Whitney Houston, Bernadette Peters and Whoopie Goldberg.

Elizabeth’s vision for this production is truly magical.  Using ariel arts, dance and wildly imaginative visuals, this is Cinderella like you’ve never seen before.  She says “This Cinderella will be a portal into an original, wacky world where everything is askew and each archetypal character shows us in their own comical way how truly fallible they all are. Ultimately, they each open our hearts. It’s interesting to me that every culture, for thousands of years, has a Cinderella story; a story of the ultimate romantic love. It’s a universal desire and a compelling theme to explore.”

After her smash hit Peter Pan last season, we can’t wait to see what she creates for Cinderella. We are looking for great comic singing actors of all ethnicities who move very well. Ariel arts is a plus.

YOUTH ACTING INTERNSHIPS

Cinderella (Enchanted version)

Our acting internship program provides a great opportunity for young performers to learn from excellent, professional Bay Area directors, choreographers, musical directors and actors. We customize a program based on the needs of each mainstage production to provide talented and committed young theatre artists the opportunity to train, rehearse and perform on our mainstage. Training and rehearsals are typically 2 to 3 afternoons a week from 4-6 and one weekend afternoon, typically Sunday 1-5.  Tech week will require extended rehearsals and attendance at all performances is mandatory.

There will be a youth auditions in late summer for acting internship roles. Please email casting@berkeley[playhouse.org with a photo and list of experience if you are interested in this.

TEEN APPRENTICES

There will also be a limited number of teen apprenticeship roles that will be cast at the May auditions. These teens will attend a limited number of regular adult rehearsals and be in the ensemble of the show, as well as possibly performing smaller supporting roles and understudy roles.  The teens will be paired with a professional actor as their mentor during the process, helping to guide their learning, offer extra performance coaching and a question and answer session about their field and career. Attendance at all performances is required.
